Capacitive Touch Technology

Projected capacitive touch technology is a widely used touch screen technology found in devices such as smartphones and tablets. Although this technology has been around since the 1970s, it has become increasingly important with the popularity of touch screen devices. Capacitive touch technology is integral to many of these devices. Let’s take a simple look at how it works.

Main Components

A projected capacitive touch screen mainly consists of three parts:

Sensor Glass: This is the core part of the touch screen, which contains a series of electrodes made from a transparent conductive material called indium tin oxide (ITO). The electrodes are arranged in rows and columns and connected to other components via metal traces.

Cover Glass: This is placed on top of the sensor glass and serves to protect and isolate the electrodes. It not only protects the electrodes from external environmental influences but also provides a better tactile feel when the user touches the screen, leveraging capacitive technology.

Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC): This part contains the controller for the touch sensor, responsible for processing touch signals.

Working Principle

When you touch the surface of the cover glass with your finger, it affects the charge of the electrodes. The controller continuously scans these electrodes, monitoring changes in their capacitance. Using complex algorithms, the controller can accurately calculate the location of your touch thanks to capacitive touch technology principles.

Advantages

Projected capacitive touch technology has many advantages, such as:

  • Multi-Touch Capability: Users can interact with the screen using multiple fingers simultaneously, providing a richer interactive experience. This is a significant advantage of capacitive touch technology.
  • Durability: Touch screens utilizing this technology are typically robust, able to withstand scratches and impacts.
  • Superior Optical Performance: Projected capacitive touch screens can deliver clear display effects, enhancing the visual experience for users.

In summary, projected capacitive touch technology offers a convenient and intuitive touch experience through efficient capacitive sensing and precise control, making the operation of modern devices simpler and smoother.
